Sea ice in June 2007

Sea ice announcements were rife in June, but a slow westerly wind was dominant in the Greenland strait for the first three weeks of the month.

The Coast Guard went on two ice exploring flights, on the 14th and the 21st.  In the previous trip, sparse ice was noticeable NW and N off Westfjords.  The ice was closest to shore about 19n.m. NNW og Kögur and 33n.m. N of Deild.  In the latter trip, sparse ice was noticeable NW and N off Westfjords and in Húnaflói two ice strips stretched south of the ice edge.  The ice was sparse, as previously mentioned, and looked like it was melting.  The ice edge came closest to shore this day 25n.m. N off Kögur, 35n.m. WNW off Rit, 34n.m. NNW off Skagatá and 27n.m. NNE off Horn.
Dispathces from ships regarding ice arrived on June 8th, on an ice edge WNW off Westfjords and then again on June 21st regarding an ice edge north of Húnaflói.  A warning was sent out because of this dispatch because of the possbility of ice smatterings close to shore with a passing northwind on the 23rd.  From the 22nd to the 27th six dispatches on scattered ice north of the Westfjords and Húnaflói were made.

Calm weather or calm westerly winds were predominant in the Greenland strait for the first three weeks of the month, but after that slow northeasterly or variable winds were prevailing.
