1.1 Observations of climate change
Since the TAR, progress in understanding how climate is chang-
ing in space and time has been gained through improvements and
extensions of numerous datasets and data analyses, broader geo-
graphical coverage, better understanding of uncertainties and a wider
variety

Last year IMO was commissioned to continue with its risk assess-
ment of volcanic activity, but also to start risk assessments due to
storm surges. IMO has now for almost 30 years carried out systemat-
ic risk assessment on avalanches, in particular snow avalanches, so
there is expertise for carrying out such an integrated approach to
the risk assessments of natural hazards.

Signs of the advancing jökulhlaup under
Skeidarárjökull came from station KAL (Figure
1b) in several 30- to 40-min-long episodes of
harmonic tremor (~4.5 and ~6.5 Hz) on 28
October. When these signs reappeared the fol-
lowing morning, 29 October, IMO contacted
NEAHS. Within hours, the electrical conductiv-
ity in the Skeidará river revealed an increasing

a systematic com-
parison of results to observed precipitation has been carried out. Un-
dercatchment of solid precipitation is dealt with by looking only at
days when precipitation is presumably liquid or by considering the
occurrence and non-occurrence of precipitation. Away from non-
resolved orography, the long term means (months, years) of observed
and simulated precipitation are often

Many QA guidelines exist such as Middlemis (2000) and
Van Waveren et al. (1999). The HarmoniQuA project (Schol-
ten et al., 2007; Refsgaard et al., 2005a) has developed a com-
prehensive set of QA guidelines for multiple modelling
domains combined with a supporting software tool, MoST
