used.
Because the ERA-20c dataset has a much coarser resolution than the ICRA dataset, for each
catchment a mean latitude and longitude was calculated and this point value used to retrieve a
timeseries based on the weighted-average among the four nearest grid-points. These timeseries
were then used to complement the results from the ICRA.

follows the standard developed by Risø National Laboratory (Troen and Petersen, 1989). An anno-
tated example is shown in Figure 3. The header line contains information about the model run, the
index numbers of the particular grid point, the local surface roughness length (SRL), as well as a
triplet of numbers with longitude in degrees east, latitude in degrees north, and height above

interpolated onto a longitude-
latitude grid. The analysis has been applied to the whole year.
The storm frequency for events with central pressure below a threshold values of 960,
970, 980 and 990hPa were examined, and the gradient wind from the simulated storm systems
were compared with corresponding estimates from the re-analysis. The analysis also yielded
estimates for the spatial extent

Iceland. MSLP
was extracted twice daily from ERA-40 (Uppala et al., 2005) for the period 1958–2001 and
available ECMWF analysis from 2002 to 2006, on a 1 X 1 latitude-longitude grid. As daily
precipitation, temperature and derived variables were averaged from 00 to 00UTC, only the
12UTC MSLP data were used so as to be centered on the same 24-h period.

extracted twice daily (00UTC and 12UTC) on a 1 x 1 latitude-longitude grid from the
ECMWF operational analysis and forecasts available for the period 2001–2006. The ana-
logue meteorological situations are extracted from the ERA-40 reanalysis archive (Uppala
