About 45 earthquakes have been detected in and around Bárðarbunga since yesterday
morning. The largest was M4.7 at 20:54 (30 Dec). Seismic activity continues in a similar
fashion

in 2001. Continuous profiles, approximately 1 km apart,
were measured in the accumulation zone and a dense net-
work of point measurements were carried out in the abla-
tion zone. Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) of the surface
and bedrock were created from these data (Fig. 2; Björns-
son and Pálsson, 2004). The estimated errors are at most
1–5 m (bias less than 1 m) for the surface

than those described above, have occurred in Bárðarbunga, where the activity started. This is the same pattern as during previous days.
The highest magnitude during the last 24 hours was about 3.8, measured at 23:38 last night (20th August).

Their discharge has grown by a factor of ten within 24 hours.
The discharge of Geithellnaá was over 480 m3/s at noon 28th Dec., probably the greastest since 1971. The older maximum was 454 m3/s 31.10.1980.
The discharge of Fossá has now exceeded 220 m3/s. The last time it exceeded 200 m3/s was 29.12.2006 but the Fossá river maximum also occurred 31.10.1980, i.e. 395 m3/s.
