Three watersheds are clustered together on the north-
eastern flank of Vatnajökull: Hálslón, Ufsarlón, and Hraunaveita, while Blönduvirkjun
extends between Langjökull and Hofsjökull.
The hydropower catchments vary in size, ranging from about 130 km2 (Hraunaveita) to almost

characterized by parallel, N-S oriented, vertical strike-
slip faults. In the last 19 years of SIL network operation, over 130 thousand microearthquakes
have been recorded in southwest Iceland, and in the last nine years, three M>6 and six M>5
events have occurred in the SISZ and Reykjanes peninsula (stars in Figure 1).
