Doctoral Student Position

The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) jointly with the Helsinki University Centre for Environment (HENVI) is inviting applications for a doctoral student position for a fixed term from 1 August 2011 to 31 December 2014.

The main work location is the Finnish Meteorological Institute in Helsinki. The position is arranged as two part-time positions, each 50% of the usual full time position. The researcher will have an employment contract both with FMI and with HENVI, each contract covering 50% of the work time. The academic supervision of the dissertation is to be carried out by a professor of Helsinki University.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) jointly with the Helsinki University Centre for Environment (HENVI) offer a position for a doctoral student in connection with the ENSURE and RECAST projects1. The position‘s research theme concerns the influence of ecosystem services - in conjunction with weather related natural amenities and hazards - on the market value of urban real estate. The aforementioned projects provide a wider research context concerned with urban resilience towards natural hazards and climate change as well as with urban sustainability at large.

Candidates should be familiar with environmental and land use economics. Affinity with urban planning, GIS, and handling of large data sets will be an advantage. Willingness and skills to operate in a multi-disciplinary and extensively networked project are important. The work in this project is expected to result in a dissertation.

The salary will be based on levels 1-4 of the requirement level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance.
