Saimaa, Lake Pielinen and Lake Syväri (Fig. 1), were chosen for
the hydrological analysis. The largest study lake is Lake Saimaa, the largest lake in
Finland with an area of 4,380 km2, while Lake Pielinen has a lake area of 890 km2 and
Lake Syväri of 81 km2. The basin areas are 61,000, 20,820 and 2,430 km2, respectively.
