Geomatica software (PCI Geomatics; Toutin 2006),
constrained with a wealth of GPS GCPs in non-glaciated
areas. The resulting DEM was further corrected and
evaluated using all available profile and point observa-
tions both on and away from the glaciers (Fig. 2a,c).
The DMA paper maps consist of 20-m contour lines
produced by the DMA Hydrographic/Topographic

The DEMs from before 2001 were created from digitized
contour lines of available older maps (Fig. 2). The ice surface
elevation of 1890 (Fig. 2b, Little Ice Age maximum, LIAmax)
was reconstructed from the more recent surface DEMs as-
suming that although the surface has lowered significantly,
the spacing of the elevation contours in the accumulation
zone only changes slightly. The location
