Trausti Jónsson (IMO, Ice) - The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR) -
the WMO method and its application in Iceland
Abstract
Natural hazards have always been a major threat to individuals and the society in Iceland.
During a period of optimism after the Second World War it was assumed that progress and
modern development would soon marginalize such threats. A series

contributing the remainder. From 1993 to 2003 the sum of these
climate contributions is consistent within uncertainties with the total
sea level rise that is directly observed. {WGI 4.6, 4.8, 5.5, SPM, Table

Observed decreases in snow and ice extent are also consistent
with warming (Figure 1.1). Satellite data since 1978 show that an-

network on the north coast of Iceland. According to the number of 4000 –
5700 Trimble receivers, the total network is relatively modern. Trimble NetRS receivers
have an ethernet and serial interface, but the older models have serial interfaces only,
making data transfer more cumbersome with modern communication technology such as
GPRS and 3G. In general the receivers have been reliable. The NetRS

close to Hveragerði). Deformation measurements in recent years also indicate possible stress accumulations in the region, which might be released as a larger earthquake. Historic recordings show that earthquakes in that region can be up to M6.5. The last earthquakes of M>6 were in 1929 and 1968. Both of these events caused no major damage in the capital area. record data at regular intervals (e.g., every 10 minutes), while manual observations are made typically every three hours, or more.
Manual measurements of cloud cover, visibility and precipitation are essential, despite technological advances in automated measurement.
Satellite-based observations are an increasingly important factor in modern-day weather forecasting.

1). Over the same period, the average total number of
people reported affected2 per decade rose by 1200%, from
approximately 38 thousand to 480 thousand. Meanwhile,
the total cost of reported damage3 doubled, from US$ 1.2
billion to US$ 2.4 billion (2006 prices), although this could
partially be explained by a higher density or vulnerability
of infrastructure and areas being used by humans. More
