(Figure 2). At least 22 eruptions have been verified on the fissure swarm SW of Vatnajökull in the last 9000
years. The last eruption was the 0.3 km3 Tröllahraun eruption in 1862-84CE. Volumes of lava flows in
individual eruptions ranges from ≤0.3 to ≥20 km3. Length of fissures ranges from 8 to 50 km. Longest lava flows

to a slight inaccuracy in the calculations. The figure on the right loosely shows the relationship between m/s and a few Beaufort-values.
The prerequisites of the calculations above are:
The equation: W = 0.836B3/2 where W is windspeed in m/s and B is value on the Beaufort-scale.
