Overview of Earthquake activity

Earthquake activity throughout the country is described in a weekly summary that is written by a Natural Hazard Specialist. The weekly summary is published on the web every Tuesday. It covers the activity of the previous week in all seismic areas and volcanic systems in the country. If earthquake swarms are ongoing or significant events such as larger earthquakes have occurred during the week, they are specifically discussed.

Weekly overview, 8-14th of May, Week 19

Approximately 350 earthquakes were located on the IMO seismic network last week. This is fewer events than the last two weeks. The largest event of the week was a magnitude 2.8 which took place on May 9th close to Kolbeinsey Island. Only three other events above magnitude 2 were recorded during the week, in Askja and on the Tjörnes fracture zone. Seismicity at Grímsvötn has decreased with only 12 recorded events last week, compared to 30 the week before. Two small events were detected in Mt. Hekla.
