Overview of Earthquake activity

Earthquake activity throughout the country is described in a weekly summary that is written by a Natural Hazard Specialist. The weekly summary is published on the web every Tuesday. It covers the activity of the previous week in all seismic areas and volcanic systems in the country. If earthquake swarms are ongoing or significant events such as larger earthquakes have occurred during the week, they are specifically discussed.

About 1500 earthquakes were detected by IMO's SIL seismic network last week. 700 of those have been manually reviewed. Considerably more earthquakes were detected this week than in last week when about 715 earthquakes were detected.

 

12 earthquakes above M3.0 were detected, 11 of those in Katla and one in Vatnajökull. The largest earthquake was in Katla, a magnitude 4.4, on July 30th.

 

The highest number of earthquakes was about 700 in Vífilsfell in Reykjanes where a seismic swarm began on the 1st of July.
