Activity summary:
An helicopter flight allowed to observe the eruption site and to assess the location and length of the new erupting fissure. The coordinate of the centre of the new fissure is 63.8946, -22.2628 and it extends for about 100-200 meters. A gas plume is raising from the fissure and a lava channel has formed running fast towards the Meradalir valley. The eruption which started on the 19th of March in Geldingadalir is still ongoing. Because of the lack of ash and tephra emission in the atmosphere, the aviation color code for Fagradalsfjall-Krýsuvík is maintained ORANGE as there are no imminent hazard for the aviation.

Cloud height:
The plume is visible from webcams, but it is hard to distinguish between the two sources. The plume raises up to 1200 m asl.

Other cloud information:
The plume is gas rich and no ash observed

Remarks:
The main hazard in the area is represented by lava flow which is filling the Geldingadalur valley and the new one which runs toward Meradalir valley. The area has been evacuated. Northerly wind will transport the gas cloud toward the sea but this evening the wind will turn and will become very variable. Some gas pollution is expected in inhabited areas.
