Reykjanes

Time: 02. Jun 2022, 11:49 GMT

Color code:  green

Volcano id: 371020

Activity summary:
The rate of the uplift ongoing around Svartsengi/Þorbjörn area has significantly reduced during the last 5 days. At the same time, the seismicity has also been declining and only about 150 earthquakes have been detected in the area in the past 24 hours. This indicates that there is currently a pause in the process causing the inflation, interpreted to mean that the magma migration to this region has stopped for the time being. This pause might be temporary, and it is considered likely that new intrusions and enhanced seismic activity will resume in the coming weeks along the peninsula. For the time being the aviation color code has been moved back to green as there are no signs of escalating activity in Reykjanes/Svartsengi volcanic system. The Civil Protection Department of Iceland maintains their alert level to UNCERTAINTY for this area.
