Grímsvötn

Time: 05. Jan 2024, 13:35 GMT

Color code:  green

Volcano id: 373010

Activity summary:
Yesterday afternoon there was a short-lived seismic swarm at Grímsvötn volcano. Seven earthquakes of magnitude M1.0 and above were measured within one hour yesterday afternoon which is considered unusual. There has not been any escalation in activity and only one M0.6 earthquake detected today. Other available monitoring data do not show any significant variations from the known background. The aviation color code at Grímsvötn is being returned back to green although the long-term trend of activity at Grímsvötn is above normal background levels for the last four months. This return to green is taken considering the need of the ACC to communicate about short-term changes and not to reflect on long-term trends. Grímsvötn remains a volcano that IMO keeps a close eye on because of the long-term unrest and IMO will inform promptly whenever there will be further changes that might suggest escalation towards an eruptive event.
