Grímsvötn

Time: 22. Jan 2024, 15:37 GMT

Color code:  green

Volcano id: 373010

Activity summary:
The recent glacial outburst flood (jökulhlaup) from Grímsvötn has peaked in the river Gígjukvísl. The aviation colour-code for Grímsvötn was increased temporarily to reflect the increased likelihood of a volcanic eruption due to pressure-related changes while meltwater drained from Grímsvötn. Now that the jökulhlaup has ended, and there are no measurable signs of short-term, elevated activity, the aviation colour-code has been returned back to green.

Cloud height:
NA

Other cloud information:
NA

Remarks:
The long-term situation at Grímsvötn is considered to be above background levels. Over monthly scales, seismicity at Grímsvötn remains high. Additionally, surface deformation at Grímsfjall has exceeded the level measured before the last eruption in May 2011. Grímsvötn remains a volcano that IMO monitors closely because of long-term unrest.
