Aviation color code

The aviation color code (ACC) follows recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and provides pilots, the public, and aviation authorities with information about the status of volcanoes that could affect air traffic.

The aviation color code is independent of the color code also issued by the Icelandic Meteorological Office, known as the “Volcano Alert Level System (VALS).” The VALS color code is intended to convey information about potential impacts on the ground, and therefore, these two color codes may differ at any given time.

Activity summary:
The eruption which commenced on 22 August in the Sundhnúks crater row has ceased, with no activity observed in the crater since 05 September. Volcanic tremor has been reducing gradually and it has now reached almost the pre-eruptive level. Ground uplift is measurable again in Svartsengi, indicating the magma has started collecting again within the magma body, as happened previously. The aviation color code is moved back to yellow for the time being.

Remarks:
Local hazards are still present in the area. They are mainly due to the cooling lava and release of gas from the lava field.
