Overview of Earthquake activity

Earthquake activity throughout the country is described in a weekly summary that is written by a Natural Hazard Specialist. The weekly summary is published on the web every Tuesday. It covers the activity of the previous week in all seismic areas and volcanic systems in the country. If earthquake swarms are ongoing or significant events such as larger earthquakes have occurred during the week, they are specifically discussed.

Weekly overview June 03rd to June 09th, Week 23, 2024

Around 600 earthquakes were located by IMO‘s SIL seismic network in Week 23, June 03rd to June 09th. The largest earthquakes this week measured M2.9. They where three in total but in different places, one just East of Herðubreið on June 03rd, near Húsmúlí on June 03rd and in Hengill on June 04th. Earthquake activity in the dike near Grindavík has been very little during the last week. In the western Hengill region in Húsmúli around 70 earthquakes were detected. Around 20 earthquakes were detected near Askja and more than 300 earthquakes near Herðubreið and Herðubreiðartögl.
