Aviation color code

The aviation color code (ACC) follows recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and provides pilots, the public, and aviation authorities with information about the status of volcanoes that could affect air traffic.

The aviation color code is independent of the color code also issued by the Icelandic Meteorological Office, known as the “Volcano Alert Level System (VALS).” The VALS color code is intended to convey information about potential impacts on the ground, and therefore, these two color codes may differ at any given time.

Notification of change in aviation color code

Grímsvötn

Time: 04. Jan 2024, 17:09 GMT

Color code:  Yellow

Volcano id: 373010

Activity summary:
For the past four months the long term seismic activity in Grímsvötn has been above background levels. Since the beginning of December 2023 there have been evidences of water leakage from the lake, however for the past 2 weeks the GPS measurements have not been available due to power issues. Today at 16:00 a series of 6 earthquakes of magnitude M1.0 and above have been measured which is considered unusual. This could be related to the water drainage, though at this stage it is hard to confirm. The aviation color code is changed to yellow for the time being and it will be reassessed tomorrow.
