Aviation color code

The aviation color code (ACC) follows recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and provides pilots, the public, and aviation authorities with information about the status of volcanoes that could affect air traffic.

The aviation color code is independent of the color code also issued by the Icelandic Meteorological Office, known as the “Volcano Alert Level System (VALS).” The VALS color code is intended to convey information about potential impacts on the ground, and therefore, these two color codes may differ at any given time.

Activity summary:
An helicopter is currently flying over the area of the eruption. It is confirmed that the location coincides with where the eruption took place on 18 December, i.e. less than 1 km North-East of Sylingarfell. The length of the fissure has reached 3 km. Lava fountaining continues and it is very well seen from cameras and reach 50-80 m high.

Cloud height:
No ash is detectable via radar and satellite images.

Other cloud information:
Gas plume is visible from satellite images and it is moving towards South.

Remarks:
