Flood research

At the Icelandic Meteorological Office a project regarding danger evaluation and risk assessment due to river floods is in the works. A part of the project has to do with residents assessment of flood risks and zoning-plans for flood areas. The project is largely a doctoral project, in co-operation between the University of Iceland and the Icelandic Meteorological Office.

Analysis of flood risks is done in geographical information systems and temporary conclusions show that flow data cannot be used to find the size of floods, but the distribution of floods is the main variable when it comes to analyzing danger and zoning areas.
