Aviation color code

The aviation color code (ACC) follows recommendations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and provides pilots, the public, and aviation authorities with information about the status of volcanoes that could affect air traffic.

The aviation color code is independent of the color code also issued by the Icelandic Meteorological Office, known as the “Volcano Alert Level System (VALS).” The VALS color code is intended to convey information about potential impacts on the ground, and therefore, these two color codes may differ at any given time.

Activity summary:
The effusive eruption which commenced at 22.17 UTC nearby Sundhnúkgigar on 18 December continues. It originates from a fissure 4 km long with its median site at 63.887N, 22.372W. From visual observation the extrusion rate is assessed to be 200-300 m3/s. The height of lava fountains has decreased over time as well as the extrusion rate. No ash is detected by radar and the activity is well seen by webcameras.

Cloud height:
NO ash in emitted.

Other cloud information:
The volcanic gas plume is well visible from cameras and it is raising up to few hundreds meters asl.

Remarks:
