of the dike extending 7 km beyond the edge of the Dyngjujökull glacier. Event depths remain unchanged at about 5-10 km. At 20:39 last night an earthquake of magnitude ~5 was observed beneath the Bárðarbunga caldera. Since then earthquakes in the caldera have been smaller than 5. GPS deformation The most recent GPS measurements indicate continuation of magma flowing into the dike under Dyngjujökull, now /media/jar/Bardarbunga_Daily_status_report_250814.pdf
  • 23. Sea ice in March 2009

were received regading sea ice but the Coast Guard went on an exploration flight on the 6th. The actual sea ice edge was not visible that day, but newly formed ice reached about 10 nm east of median. Easterly and northeasterly winds were dominant in the Greenland Strait /sea-ice/monthly/2009/nr/2325

in the following locations: 80 nm WNW of Bjargtangar, 46 nm NW of Barði, 40 nm NW of Straumnes and 41 nm N of Kögur. No icebergs were to be seen near the ice edge. On the Greenland Strait, northeasterly wind directions were dominant to begin with, and most of the month, but at the end of the month there were a few days with southwesterly wind /sea-ice/monthly/2011/nr/2348

was seen just within the jurisdiction of Greenland. No large floes were seen on radar beyond the ice edge. No observations were received from ships but 3rd April one observation was received from land, reporting an ice berg in location 65°42' N 32°07'W. On the Greenland Straight easterlies were predominant but occasionally strong southwesterly wind prevailed for a few days /sea-ice/monthly/2011/nr/2375

  • 29. Seismic activity at Bárðarbunga persists

There are currently two swarms: one to the E of Bárðarbunga caldera and one at the edge of Dyngjujökull just E of Kistufell. At 2.37 am on the 18th a strong earthquake (M4) was located in the Kistufell swarm. This is the strongest earthquake measured in the region since 1996. As evidence of magma movement shallower than 10 km implies increased potential of a volcanic eruption, the Bárðarbunga /about-imo/news/nr/2938
