New weather forecast website launched

The first step in renewing the Icelandic Meteorological Office's Website

3.2.2025

The first phase of the Icelandic Meteorological Office's (IMO) new website was launched today. This marks the beginning of a major project aimed at renewing both the website and its entire technical infrastructure.

The new weather forecast website is available at https://gottvedur.is/en/. While the site is still in development, once the renewal of the current website is complete, the new weather pages will be moved to the domain vedur.is.

In this initial phase, the focus is on the information that people check most frequently—weather forecasts for specific locations. In addition to an improved user-interface of location-based forecasts, the users can find weather forecast for many more places than before, with more locations to be added gradually.

Jóhann Páll Jóhannsson, Minister of the Environment, Energy, and Climate, officially launches the new website today alongside Hildigunnur H.H. Thorsteinsson, Director of the Icelandic Meteorological Office.

Forsida_Mobile_ENG"It is a great pleasure for me to inaugurate the new website of the Icelandic Meteorological Office. This first step towards an improved website is a significant advancement in access to fundamental data and information on weather and natural forces. The website will be useful in people's daily lives and serve as a tool for collecting and sharing meteorological information. It is fitting that we launch it in typical Icelandic winter weather," said Jóhann Páll Jóhannsson, Minister of the Environment, Energy, and Climate, at today's launch event.

"The current website has served us well for almost 20 years, making today a milestone moment," said Hildigunnur H.H. Thorsteinsson, Director of the Icelandic Meteorological Office. "The fact that the website has remained largely unchanged for so long is a testament to its quality at the time. However, we had accrued significant technical debt with both the website and its associated IT infrastructure. What we see today is just the tip of the iceberg in a complete overhaul of our digital environment. The biggest change users will likely notice is that the new website is much more smart phone friendly," she added.
